Following the Business Meeting, Sandy Kaufman will present Our Forgotten Heroes: American Women in World War II.
After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, thousands of men immediately began to enlist in the military. Eleanor Roosevelt stated, “Women are a weapon waiting to be used.”
Prior to the war society confined women to the domestic sphere revolving around the roles of wife, mother and homemaker. The ideal woman was a caregiver creating a haven of peace and tranquility within the home.
As the men went off to war, the demand for women in the workforce and later the military challenged long-held societal norms. Women across the country felt a strong sense of patriotism and a compelling need to contribute to the war effort.
While the modern image is that of “Rosie the Riveter,” women did so much more than working in factories; they served as nurses, flew airplanes, drove trucks, operated secret radar installations, worked in intelligence and code breaking, and operated in the dangerous world of espionage and covert operatons.
This is the story of the contributions and patriotism of an entire generation of American women who often went unrecognized for the vital contributions to victory in World War II.
Intended for adults.
Sponsored by the Friends of Huntingdon Valley Library.
