Four Aspects of Art Nouveau
Art Nouveau is a revolutionary style which for a brief period at the turn onto the 20th century inspired some of the most gifted artists and craftsmen in Europe and America.
Considered a “total” art style, Art Nouveau embraced architecture, graphic art, interior design, and most of the decorative arts including jewelry, furniture, textiles, household silver as well as the fine arts.
Reacting against 19th century traditionalism, it introduced a new feeling for space, a new cult of the line and a new system ornamentation that drew much of its inspiration from nature.
The development of the style in the 1890s resulted in a wealth of national variations, each with its own unique characteristics.
This course will offer an introduction to Art Nouveau in general and then will explore four of those regional interpretations of the style.
Elizabeth Anderson, former Curator of Education for Adult and Public Programs at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, will be presenting this exciting 4-part lecture series. Betsy was a member of the museum staff for 40 years and retired in 2005. Since her retirement she continues as a guest lecture at both the Museum and Princeton University.
